Montenegro fits into five days because nothing is more than three hours from anything else — yet the change from the Adriatic to the Durmitor plateau is as dramatic as any drive in Europe.

Before you go
- Headlights on at all times — the police at the coastal checkpoints fine for it.
- In summer, cross the Bay of Kotor by the Kamenari ferry rather than driving the bay road twice.
- The P14 and the Durmitor ring have no barriers on long stretches. Drive them in daylight, and do the ring clockwise.
- Fuel up in Nikšić or Žabljak; stations in the mountains are hours apart.

May–June and September–early October: warm, dry, and without the July–August traffic and border queues. Winter closes the high passes.
